Counsellor

Walter Carter, MBA, MA, ACA-L4

I started FreeForm Counselling in August 2020 with the intention of cultivating a culturally sensitive and inclusive counselling practice. As a multi-ethnic American with Polish and African-American heritage, I understand the challenges that come with being of mixed background and a person of colour.

I grew up in New York City but my love of travel has led me to live in Tanzania, The Netherlands, and now call Melbourne, Australia home.

I use a collaborative and holistic approach with clients for individual, couples, family and group sessions. I work with a diverse range of clients including those with a multicultural background, adolescents, and the LGBTQI+ community.

I am passionate about working with clients to develop skills and tools to create sustainable self-empowerment and fulfilment within their lives, and I love using metaphor to help expand the way we view the world and our place in it.

I work with clients experiencing ADHD, bipolar, anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, PTSD, sexual dysfunction, relationship issues and eating disorders. My therapeutic modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Adlerian, Humanistic, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Gestalt, psychodynamic and family systems theory.

I completed a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counselling at the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, Iowa (USA) and an MBA from the University of New Haven, located in New Haven, Connecticut (USA). I am registered with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) as a level 4 therapist. I am also a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado (USA).

I am accepting of all forms of spirituality, religion, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and sexual orientations and identities. My work hours are Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. Video and phone sessions are also available.
